Assistant Liquor Operations Manager

The City of Rogers is accepting applications for the position of a full-time Assistant Liquor Operations Manager. The Assistant Liquor Operations Manager is responsible for contributing to the management and direction of the municipal off‐sale and event on-sale liquor operations to provide a controlled retail service to the community at a profit. Duties include, but are not limited to: ensure customers have a great experience, coach and develop employees, ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local statutes, assist the Liquor Operations Director in the preparation and management of annual operating plan, budget, and goals; assist in preparing marketing and merchandising concepts; purchase liquor stock and maintain appropriate inventories; and establish store policies such as pricing and discount policies.

POSITION SUMMARY

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure customers have a great experience by teaching and coaching employees to greet customers, discover their needs, make confident recommendations.

  • Model the desired customer service behaviors and selling skills.

  • Ensure conformance of all store operations to all applicable laws and regulations.

  • Monitor and assist in updating internal control policies and procedures as it relates to cash handling and inventory management to ensure proper segregation of duties and to reduce the risk of misappropriation of assets.

  • Ensure all established policies and procedures are adhered to for the accounting of cash sales, and reviews and audits positions with responsibility for the handling of money to insure integrity in the exchange and deposit of money for the liquor operations.

  • Coordinating with the Liquor Operations Director, develop an operating plan and budget that projects capital expenditures, revenues, expenses and profits. Monitor sales and expenditures against the current budget; perform sales and expenditures analysis, taking corrective action when necessary.

  • Responsible for purchasing, establishing and maintaining appropriate inventory levels for the liquor operations and administering the inventory process. Selects and places orders with vendors and suppliers for materials and/or services and/or supervises others placing orders with vendors.

  • Enter invoices, transfers, adjustments and other transactions accurately into the point-of-sale system.

  • Determine products and brands to be carried by the liquor department by studying product trends, sales trends, and customer preferences. Stays current with marketing evaluations and techniques and implements as appropriate.

  • Set prices for all merchandise sales for which the role is responsible purchasing to assure attainment of profit margins and conformance with City policy.

  • Evaluate, recommend, and develop retail objectives for the liquor operations, including: customer service objectives; employee engagement and productivity; marketing, merchandising, advertising strategies; community relationships and store improvements.

  • Responsible for ensuring the product purchased is stocked and stored so it can be retrieved efficiently and counted easily and accurately.

  • Responsible for maintaining facility equipment.

  • Responsible for reconciling daily sales to point-of-sale and credit card data, and investigating discrepancies.  Communicate with and provide information to Finance.

  • Responsible for employee supervision when working, but especially in the Liquor Operation Director’s absence.

  • Review, evaluate and recommend appropriate training programs to keep all liquor department staff informed and knowledgeable of store products, laws and regulations as pertains to the sale of liquor and tobacco.

  • Perform all other related duties and responsibilities as apparent or as assigned.

  • Knowledge of product lines sold in the liquor department, especially within purchasing categories.

  • Buying experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

General environmentally controlled retail store conditions but will also be exposed to inclement weather conditions assisting customers with carryout and overseeing deliveries. Service operations will vary from loud to quiet depending on the number of customers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands are those encountered while performing the listed essential functions.

While performing the duties associated with the job, employee will be required to stand or sit; walk, use hands to fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to work in a cooler; stoop or crouch with frequent bending, twisting and standing for long periods of time. Must be able to speak and hear. Physical strength to lift/carry/move up to 50 pound cases of merchandise frequently, stock shelves/coolers and assist customers with carryout.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in retail marketing/management or related field plus a minimum of 4 years with progressively responsible management and supervisory experience in a retail setting; or equivalent training and experience.

  • Previous experience with a liquor operation or in the liquor industry (vendor representative, supplier representative).

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a successful/profitable retail operation.

  • Excellent product and industry knowledge.

  • Must have complete and thorough working knowledge of point‐of‐sale systems.

  • Must be available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, which will involve frequent evenings and weekends; a non-traditional work schedule.

  • Strong problem‐solving and planning skills.
